BERKELEY — The death of a man whose badly injured body was found early Wednesday night in the roadway on Ashby Avenue is under investigation by police, authorities said Thursday.

The man’s name has not yet been released. Police said he appears to be in his 60s.

He was found about 6:11 p.m. Wednesday lying on the street underneath the Ashby Avenue train overcrossing west of Seventh Street.

He had severe injuries to his head and chest and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, police said.

The death is being investigated by the department’s Fatal Accident Investigation Team.  But police have not said if they think the man was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene or suffered his injuries another way.

Anyone with information about the death is asked to call the department traffic unit at 510-981-5980.
