The world of Marvel is an intricate and constantly evolving beast, and for that reason it is not surprising that new reports have revealed that the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has set cameras rolling again with both additional material and reshoots being filmed in Los Angeles. The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that there will be at least a further six weeks of shooting done, with six days a week being worked. This new month and half of recording time further explains the decision by Disney and Marvel Studios to delay many of the upcoming Marvel movies, with the Doctor Strange sequel being one of them.

According to the report, both writer Michael Waldron and director Sam Raimi are involved with the filming of the material, along with the crew that has been recently working in the city on Spider-Man: No Way Home and Moon Knight shoots that have been appended to the original filming schedule of both properties. While it has been suggested that these new pieces of recording will not be used to change the main story of the movie in any way, the latest word is that two weeks will be used completing principal photography that was cut short by the Covid pandemic shutdowns and similarly the reshoots could also be linked to Covid issues such as actor availability. While it is expected that Benedict Cumberbatch will be part of this new shoot, it is unclear as to who else will be required to return.

Elizabeth Olsen already completed some reshoots a couple of months ago after the initial filming of her role wrapped, so whether she will be required for any of the shoot is not known but is less likely than some of the other cast members. One thing that has been made clear by sources is that the reshoots happening on Doctor Strange 2 are “not the biggest” that they have seen on the Marvel slate, and are just part of the natural filming process that usually sees the main actors brought back to filming a couple of months into post-production to tidy up a few shots. However, with a six-week shoot planned, it seems more than just a bit of housekeeping being done on the movie.

Speaking to Variety last month after the announcement that many Marvel movies were being delayed, Kevin Feige said, “It’s production shifts and changes, and because we have so many slots, we can just shift slots. All the Marvel slots are the same, we’re just shifting when they’re coming out. And yes, Strange [in the Multiverse of Madness] has moved six weeks, so instead of there being three months between Marvel movies, there will be five months between Marvel movies and I think we can all handle that.”

With this new information about a six week run of reshoots being done on the film, it seems like as with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s filming break due to Letitia Wright’s on-set injury until early next year, these delays and additional shooting time is exactly what has led to Disney taking the tough decision on shuffling the release schedule to accommodate.
