It’s official, the Echo series is happening at Disney+. We were expecting plenty of big reveals to be announced on Disney+ Day, and there has been a lot to come out teasing the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s now been confirmed that Alaqua Cox will star in Echo, a new Disney+ series that will serve as a spinoff to Hawkeye. You can check out the official logo below.

Echo will star Cox as Maya Lopez, a deaf Native American superhero with the ability to imitate any opponent’s fighting style. She will first be seen as the character in Hawkeye which is premiering on Disney+ this month, though it’s unclear which episode will mark the character’s first appearance. Maya has mingled with the likes of Daredevil, Moon Knight, and other Marvel characters in the comics, so the potential for others to show up on her solo series is high.

Hawkeye also stars Jeremy Renner reprising his role as Clint Barton from the Avengers movies alongside Hailee Steinfeld as his protege Kate Bishop. Reprising her role from Black Widow for the series is Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. Also starring are Fra Fee as the villain clown Kazi and Tony Dalton as Hawkeye’s mentor, Jack Duqesne, aka Swordsman. Zahn McClarnon also stars as Maya’s father, William Lopez. Cox previously showed an image of herself on the Hawkeye set on Instagram.

“I had no acting experience, I was only involved in one school play in high school, but I was a background actor,” Alaqua Cox said of her Hawkeye casting, per People. “[My friends] saw the casting call looking for a Native American actress and female deaf actress. It just matched so perfectly, so I decided to go for it. I had never seen anybody on the screen that maybe looked like me … deaf, an amputee.”

Of when she found out she got the role, Cox added, “My dad actually cried, and it is rare to see my dad cry. My mom got the champagne – everybody was so excited. I just feel so overwhelmed by support and love. It’s crazy how much my life has already changed because I was a college dropout. I worked at a factory. I’m so excited to show people who I am and what I can do, what anybody can do.”

While the premiere of Hawkeye is imminent, there are many other exciting Marvel shows fans are also anticipating. Disney+ Day brought about some big news for some of them, with first look teasers for other titles like Moon Knight and She-Hulk. The MCU continues to expand on the big screen with many big titles coming out in movie theaters, but with so many other shows heading to Disney+, there’s more than enough for fans to enjoy on the small screen as well.
