MARTINEZ — County prosecutors have filed a murder charge against a Walnut Creek man who was arrested early Monday for allegedly murdering his mother.

Nicholas Roth, 39, was charged with murdering 74-year-old Darlene Roth. The charging records allege he stabbed his mother to death with a knife.

Nicholas Roth is a part-time employee with the Bay Area News Group.

He was arrested around 5 a.m. Monday, at a home on the 600 block of Jones Road, after Darlene Roth called 9-1-1 and said she was the victim of a stabbing. When officers arrived, life-saving measures already were being performed on her. An ambulance rushed her to a hospital, but she was pronounced dead.

Nicholas Roth remains in county jail on a no-bail hold. He was also charged with elder abuse causing death.

The homicide was the fourth in the city of Walnut Creek in 2021. The city had four homicides in 2018 but did not have any in 2019 or 2020.
