It is just over a month until Spider-Man: No Way Home finally arrives in theaters and all those rumors and questions will all be forgotten in a haze of delight or disappointment depending on which ones audiences set their heart on seeing. While the final trailer is supposedly caught in a tussle between Marvel Studios and Sony over whether or not to show “those two characters,” Tom Holland has been revealing a bit more about the feel of the movie in the new issue of Total Film and it may not be welcome news to many fans of his web-slinging hero.

The arrival of the multiverse in the MCU has opened a can of worms that could fill a black hole in regards to which characters will now be entering the Marvel timeline and how, and Spider-Man: No Way Home currently accounts for a majority of this speculation. We have already seen Doc Ock return in the first trailer, after it became the worst-kept Marvel secret of this year, and a new poster has now also confirmed the return of Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, along with Electro and Sandman. That means we are now only left with a small doubt over the possible inclusion of The Lizard, Venom, Matt Murdock, who has once again been rumored to appear thanks to new images leaked recently, and of course the two previous Spider-Men Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire.

While we wait of those question marks being ticked off, Tom Holland has made it clear in his new interview that this is not going to be a happy outing for Spider-Man, and fans should be ready for him to come up against his most formidable opponents.

Holland said, “What people will be really surprised about is that it’s not fun, this film. It’s dark and it’s sad, and it’s going to be really affecting. You’re going to see characters that you love go through things that you would never wish for them to go through. And I was just really excited to kind of lean into that side of Peter Parker. Peter Parker is always someone who’s looking up. He’s always really positive. He’s always like, ‘I can fix this. I can do this.’ Whereas in this film, he feels like he’s met his match. He’s like, ‘I don’t know what to do.’ That was an aspect of the character that I’d never seen before, and I was really, really excited to try to tackle. I haven’t seen the film yet but I’ve seen pieces of the film, and it’s the best work we’ve ever done. It’s the best Spider-Man film that we’ve ever made. I really don’t think fans are at all ready for what they’ve put together. I know that I’m not ready, and I know that it’s going to be brutal.”

The previous MCU Spider-Man movies were some of the more light-hearted entries in the Infinity Saga, but as we head into Phase Four and Kevin Feige’s “new beginnings” era, it looks like that is all about to change in this film, which Holland has previously said feels like an ending of a story. The question is, will it also be the beginning of a new one away from the MCU? This story comes to us from Total Film via GamesRadar.
