Jungle Cruise producer and Seven Bucks president Hiram Garcia has now confirmed that the upcoming sequel will set sail for more diverse locations, exploring the world far beyond the Amazon. While the first outing stayed true to Disney’s eponymous theme park attraction, it sounds like Jungle Cruise 2 will move away from its namesake in order to carve out its own adventure.
“I think one thing fans can expect is our heroes covering more territory. Our first movie mainly went between London and the Amazon, but for this next adventure we have much bigger plans. That coupled with the joy of seeing how Frank and Lilly’s relationship continues to evolve are just a few of the many things we’ve been having fun playing with as we break story.”
Confirming that production is still working on the story for Jungle Cruise 2, it’s possible that the follow-up will see the adventuring couple move away from simply cruising, journeying to all corners of the world in search of mystical talismans and the like. Aside from teasing the wider scope of the sequel, Garcia revealed that the Jungle Cruise sequel has become a priority project for both Seven Bucks and Disney, which suggests that the studios have a lot of confidence in the eventual reuniting of Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. And justifiably so.
“We loved making that movie, and not only making that movie but the family that we created coming off of it. We love Emily Blunt and can’t do enough with her; she’s become such a close friend to the production team and the filmmakers. Her and DJ are the best of friends and have been deeply involved with us on development. We have an idea of what we want to do and the adventure we want to take these guys on. It’s a big priority for us and Disney, and we can’t wait to take the fans on another ride with this group.”
Inspired by the famous Disneyland theme park ride, Disney’s Jungle Cruise is an adventure-filled, rollicking thrill-ride down the Amazon with wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) and intrepid researcher Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt). Lily is determined to uncover an ancient tree with unparalleled healing abilities-possessing the power to change the future of medicine. Thrust on this epic quest together, the unlikely duo encounters innumerable dangers and supernatural forces, all lurking in the deceptive beauty of the lush rainforest.
The first Jungle Cruise was initially scheduled for release back in 2019, before being moved to 2020, where it was then postponed again amid the ongoing global situation and weariness over theatrical releases. This led to Disney announcing that the movie would instead be released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access, and, despite all the drama, Jungle Cruise has since found much financial success, grossing over $204 million worldwide making it the tenth highest-grossing movie of 2021, and raking in $30 million from worldwide Disney+ Premier sales in its opening weekend.
Jungle Cruise is due to be released to Disney+’s standard subscriber access on Disney+ Day, November 12th, which will also see Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings also become available. This comes to us from The Wrap.
