A nearly two-year old boy was killed after being shot by a stray bullet Saturday afternoon on Interstate 880 in Oakland, according to authorities.
Authorities have confirmed the child was Jasper Wu of Fremont, just a few weeks shy of turning 2.
Initial reports indicate there was an exchange of gunfire between people in two cars on northbound I-880 near Broadway at about 2:15 p.m..
The child was in a Lexus sedan, along with several family members, traveling in the southbound lanes when he was hit by a stray bullet, according to early reports.
He was transported to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, and was the only reported injury from the incident.
Northbound I-880 was closed from 27th Avenue to 16th Avenue in Oakland for hours, causing a backup. All lanes reopened just after 5 p.m.
