“The Woman in Black” is finally coming to the Bay Area.
The acclaimed play, which has thrilled crowds in London for 30-plus years, is set to make its Bay Area premiere in December in San Francisco.
The hauntingly good production runs Dec. 15-Jan. 17 at the Strand Theater.
Tickets are $35-$85, act-sf.org/womaninblack.
The play is adapted for the stage by Stephen Mallatratt from Susan Hill’s gothic ghost story of the name. It’s directed by Robin Herford, who also stars in the production. The setting is “an isolated windswept mansion with tragic secrets hidden behind its shuttered windows” where “a young lawyer encounters horrific visions in the house set amidst the eerie marshes and howling winds of England’s forbidding Northeast Coast,” according to a news release.
“I’m delighted to open “The Woman in Black” in the San Francisco Bay Area on the heels of the return of the production to New York City,” Herford says. “We are looking forward to spooking the Bay Area this holiday season.”
Hill’s “The Woman in Black” was originally published in 1983. Five years later, Herford commissioned Mallatratt to adapt the novel for the stage and it made its debut as a Christmas show at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough, U.K. The play moved to London’s West End in January 1989, where it been running ever since.
