A flag, boxed in a triangular-shaped memorial container, along with a black-and-white photo of a serviceman, found Thursday along Interstate 580 in Livermore, has been returned to the family, officials said.

The Dublin office of the CHP had been searching for the flag’s owners after it was recovered by officers. After the department tweeted out a plea seeking more information on the flag, the family, who was not been identified, contacted the office.

The box, containing a flag that traditionally is draped over the casket of a fallen military member, was found on the freeway, near Isabel Avenue.

CHP tweeted out the news on Friday that the flag had been returned to the family.

“What a great end to this story!” the tweet read. “After seeing media posts and broadcast on TV, this family has been reunited with their father’s veteran memorial flag and case.”

Internet sleuths got in on the search, trying facial recognition programs and retweeting the post about the found flag.

News of the reunion was included in a statement from the Dublin CHP office: “We have found the family of the found soldier’s flag. We presented the flag case back to the family, who were very appreciative.”
