In preparation for debris flow evacuations, the County of Santa Cruz has opened avirtual Temporary Evacuation Point, according to a Saturday morning release from the county.

The county plans to open a shelter at 8 a.m. Sunday when residents are notified of required evacuations.
The Sheriff’s Office on Saturday began door-to-door outreach in anticipation of evacuationsin higher risk areas. Deputies are contacting homes in the low-lying, high-risk areas that have the highest potential for evacuation. This outreach was scheduled for Saturday only.
Zones have been updated for risk of debris flow areas. Residents are encouraged tolook up their evacuation zone at community.zonehaven.com. Residents should alsoregister landlines, cell phones or VoIP phones with CodeRED by visitingscr911.org and signing up for notifications, or texting SCR911 to 99411, according to the county release.
Debris flows are fast-moving masses of mud, rocks, boulders, trees and sometimesare homes or vehicles. The flows move quickly and are often deadly to those in their path. When evacuating, the county urges residents to take the following steps:
• Follow instructions from local officials, including for travel routes.
• Wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes.
• Take your emergency go-bag or disaster supply kit.
• Lock your home.
• Shut off water, gas and electricity if instructed to do so.
• Let others know when you left and where you are going.
• Make arrangements for pets and livestock, if necessary.
