JAMESTOWN — A 34-year-old incarcerated man was stabbed to death at the state prison here nearly two weeks ago, but officials waited until Monday to make the incident public.
Hubert Watts, 34, was stabbed to death Oct. 6 at the Sierra Conservation Center in Jamestown, where he was more than three years into a seven-year prison term for a robbery conviction out of Glenn County. He died less than an hour after being stabbed around 8:30 a.m., authorities said.
The suspected stabber, Carlos B. Hernandez, 50, has been incarcerated since 1993 for child molestation, assault with a firearm, rape, and kidnapping convictions in Los Angeles County. He was scheduled to be eligible for parole next year.
It was the first homicide at the prison since 2013.
The Tuolumne County District Attorney was assisting the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in the investigation. A court search Monday did not show Hernandez facing a murder charge.
A prison spokeswoman did not respond to inquiries about the suspected murder weapon.
