Welcome to the Bay Area News Group (Mercury News & East Bay Times) girls athlete of the week poll.

For the entire academic year, we will provide a list of candidates who stood out over the previous week and allow you, the reader, to vote for the winner.

This week, we consider performances between Oct. 4-10.

Polls close at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

We also review stats submitted to MaxPreps by coaches/team statisticians.

On to the nominees:

Marykate Cawicaan, Yerba Buena volleyball: The 5-foot-6 middle hitter and team captain led the Aztec Warriors to a 4-2 week. She had 55 assists, 49 kills, 39 digs and 18 aces to go along with eight blocks. Yerba Buena is 14-6 overall and 4-1 in the BVAL-Santa Teresa South Division.

Mia Etheridge, Half Moon Bay volleyball: The junior had 20 kills and seven aces in the Cougars’ 2-0 week that included wins over Mills and Capuchino. Half Moon Bay is 9-0 in the PAL Ocean Division and 18-5 overall.

Jackie King, Los Gatos water polo: The Wildcats’ goalie and utility player had 44 blocks, three steals, two assists and one goal during a 6-0 week. Though only a junior, King is already committed to Stanford..

Waileia Lee, Moreau Catholic water polo: The 5-foot-3 junior had eight goals, five steals and five assists as the Mariners improved to 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the Mission Valley Athletic League. Lee is the Mariners’ team captain.

Sophia Nordenholz, Albany cross country: The senior was the top Northern California finisher and third overall at the 42nd Asics Clovis Invitational. She ran the 5,000-meters course in 17:28.

Katie Spivakovsky, Menlo-Atherton golf: The Bears’ senior carded a 40 at Sharon Heights GCC in Menlo Park to gain medalist honors in a 266-295 victory over Carlmont. M-A is 8-3 on the season.

Emma Symon, Los Altos volleyball: In a wild five-set win over Palo Alto, the team captain and middle blocker soared high to tally the winning point for the Eagles. The 6-foot-2 Syman finished with 12 kills and five blocks. 

Tricia Zhang, Menlo tennis: The senior won all three of her matches as the Knights beat Miramonte, Santa Barbara and St. Francis-Sacramento. Zhang is regarded as a three-star recruit by the Tennis Recruiting Network.
