Trends of the late 1990s and early 2000s are back in full force—from fashion to makeup to hairstyles. We’ve even begun seeing this influence in the tattoo world. That’s right, tramp stamps are back, baby.
If you’re not aware, tramp stamps were a monumental tattoo trend that exploded in popularity during the late ’90s and early ’00s. They grew in popularity through celebrities such as like Christina Aguilera, Jessica Alba, Britney Spears, Drew Barrymore, Christina Ricci and Nicole Richie. And before long, the lower back tattoo was everywhere. So many women’s first tattoos were a tramp stamp— often tribal with a butterfly. And there are many reasons, aside from celebrity support, that it spread like wild fire worldwide.
First and foremost, the location is great for a tattoo. It’s a large, flat surface that if done properly, contours the body in an appealing and feminine way. Two, they’re easily hidden under clothes (except if you’re fond of low rise jeans). And three, they’re a sexy little surprise!
It’s a shame that society ruined tramp stamps for an entire generation and we’re happy to see they’re finally getting much needed redemption they deserve. Gen Z is bringing back tramp stamps with a vengeance and putting their own spin on this classic tattoo trend. Many collectors are sticking with the classic imagery: tribal patterns, butterflies, crosses, etc. However, they’re putting a contemporary twist on these tattoos by opting for a fine line approach. This yields tattoos that feel both vintage and modern at the same time.
