Almost two years after Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness captivated the nation in the early days of the pandemic, providing us with some hot tiger/polyamory/alleged murder-for-hire related gossip to discuss during our endless parade of Zoom happy hours, it seems the wild world of big cats is back. That’s right, cool cats and kittens — Tiger King is officially getting a sequel.
On Thursday morning, Netflix announced the series’ latest installment would hit the streaming service this year, promising “just as much mayhem and madness as Season 1,” a very bold statement considering the first season was a roughly six-hour fever dream of sworn rivalries, allegedly deadly intentions, and suspected cults. One of the several true-crime series hitting the streaming platform over the next several months, according to Deadline, the platform has yet to announce what Tiger King‘s new season, which was filmed in 2020 and early 2021, will be about or which of the show’s cast of lively, real-life characters — including flower-crown enthusiast, Carole Baskin, and alleged cult leader, Doc Antle – will return to the small screen.
While nothing is certain, it seems we may be seeing the series’s sequined breakout star, Joe Exotic when the show returns. Alongside the announcement, Netflix included an image appearing to depict a mulleted Exotic – who did not get pardoned by now-former President Trump in January, nor ride off out of prison into the sunset in the pickup truck limo – talking on the phone presumably in the Fort Worth, Texas federal prison, where he is being held. Exotic, whose legal name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage, is currently serving a 22-year sentence after being convicted of allegedly hiring two hitmen to kill his arch-nemesis, Baskin.
