In most instances, rides and attractions at Disney World or Disney Land take inspiration from classic films. However, in the case of “The Haunted Mansion,” it was the ride that came first. “The Haunted Mansion” was conceived by Walt Disney and his team of Imagineers prior to the opening of the Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. This attraction was introduced to Disneyland in 1969 in New Orleans Square of the park alongside another ride to movie— “Pirates of the Caribbean.” The ride was then built in the Magic Kingdom of Disney World in 1971 and in later years debuting in Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong.
The ride features many legendary characters, including the Ghost Host, a number of stretching portraits, Madame Leota, the Bride, the Phantom, Organist, Hatbox Ghost and many more. Many of these characters were brought to life in 2003’s “The Haunted Mansion” live-action film starring Eddie Murphy. Despite receiving mostly negative reviews, it grossed $182.3 million worldwide.
