1 SEE: A ‘Guilty’ pleasure

For such a handsome fellow, Jake Gyllenhaal is awfully good at playing tense, damaged people. He’s at it again in “The Guilty,” which tops our list of new movies you should know about.

2 SEE, SIP & HEAR: A cool place for concerts

Outdoor shows are all the rage these days, what with COVID safety precautions, and all. And we know of an overlooked gem of a spot hosting some terrific shows. (Plus the food and craft brews are off the hook.) Here’s a look.

3 EAT: Michelin-approved dishes that don’t cost a zillion dollars

Sure, Michelin stars are exciting. But when we dine out, we’d prefer not to have to take out a loan. You, too? Then check out the 18 new Bay Area restaurants that just landed on the affordable Michelin Bib Gourmand list, where a two-course dinner and a glass of wine runs $40 or less — and sometimes wayyyy less — per person. Hello, date night!

4 WATCH: An epic sci-fi show, or a creepy thriller.

Two new shows debuting this week look particularly promising. “Foundation” is an overdue adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s stories, and “Midnight Mass” looks scary as heck. They’re two of the 12 new fall TV shows we are stoked about.

5 EAT & SIP: Oktoberfest, Bay Area style

Munich’s grand Oktoberfest has — sadly — been canceled once more. But here are seven great Bay Area beer gardens, where you can channel your inner Bavarian and get that stein vibe going.

6 WATCH: A bittersweet homecoming on stage

Dael Orlandersmith’s unique love story “Yellowman” was a Pulitzer Prize finalist; now Aurora Theatre is streaming her autobiographical 2009 hit “Stoop Stories.” Read all about it here.

7 EAT: Make a DIY granola bar

If you’re hitting the trail anytime soon, chances are good you’ll be packing a granola bar or 12. Why not make them yourself? They’re not only cheaper and better for you than the commercial version, you can customize them to suit your raisin-ophobic, dried cranberry-loving self. Here’s how.
