Gersson Rosas is out as the Minnesota Timberwolves‘ president of basketball operations.
Sachin Gupta, the Timberwolves’ executive vice president of basketball operations, is expected to be promoted to the franchise’s interim head of basketball operations, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The team is planning to conduct a broader search to find a permanent replacement, sources said.
In a statement announcing the move Wednesday, team owner Glen Taylor said the Wolves “remain committed to building a winning team that our fans and city can be proud of.”
The timing Rosas’ dismissal caught players and other members of the organization by surprise, sources told ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne and Zach Lowe. Rosas was still holding meetings and was in the gym Wednesday morning, the sources said.
Minnesota hired Rosas, a former Houston Rockets executive, in May 2019, making him the highest-ranking Latino in a front-office position.
The Wolves finished near the bottom of the Western Conference during both seasons of Rosas’ tenure, going 19-45 in 2019-20 and 23-49 last season.
