Mayor Lori Lightfoot unveiled a $16.7 billion budget plan Monday that boosts funding for police and relies on federal money to help fill the city’s budget hole.
The mayor wants to close a $733 million budget shortfall next year with a portion of that money. To help pay for the mayor’s capital investment plan, Lightfoot will boost the property tax levy by $76.5 million.
Chicago is set to get $1.9 billion under the Biden administration’s American Rescue Plan, WGN reports.
The budget includes several points of major investment for the city, including $400 million for community safety with a $142 million increase in the police budget.
