CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Chapel Hill police have taken a man into custody on Thursday in the 2012 murder of Faith Hedgepeth, 19, a University of North Carolina coed. The woman was discovered beaten to death at her off-campus apartment, according to reports.
Durham resident Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares, 28, was arrested in connection to the homicide, Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue said during a Thursday news conference, WRAL reported.
“Today’s announcement marks the next phase of the investigation,” the chief said. Assistant Chief Celisa Lehew told reporters the investigation is not complete, but provided no further details.
Salguero-Olivares is charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bail. Law enforcement officials released no details regarding his arrest, or what relationship he had with the young woman, The Raleigh News & Observer reported.

Hedgepeth was a 19-year-old student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill at the time of her death. Her roommate discovered her fatally beaten body in their off-campus apartment on Sept. 7, 2012.
An autopsy revealed Hedgepeth suffered skull fractures, cuts on her face and head, and badly beaten arms and legs during the extremely violent crime.
The victim’s parents Roland and Connie Hedgepeth attended the highly publicized news conference on Thursday. It also attracted the presence of North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, Durham County District Attorney Satana Deberry and other local officials including those from the State Bureau of Investigations, USA Today reported.
“When I got the news this morning, I didn’t do anything but cry, and thank God,” Connie Hedgepeth said. “When I cried, it was tears of joy, tears of relief, knowing that someone had been arrested in her case.”
