OAKLAND — A 39-year-old man was shot early Thursday morning in East Oakland, authorities said.

He was in stable condition.

The man told police he was out walking at about 12:15 a.m. Thursday in the area of the 5700 block of Foothill Boulevard when he heard gunfire and realized he had been wounded in his chest.

He said he did not see who fired the shots.

The man was able to walk to a friend’s home a few blocks away and get a ride to a hospital.

Police are trying to determine a motive for the shooting and whether the wounded man was the intended target.  No arrests have been made.
