CHICAGO — In a stunning comparison of medical emergencies from gunshot wounds versus coronavirus deaths among children, some shocking figures have been discovered.

According to data from law enforcement authorities and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been more minors shot in Chicago than have died of COVID-19 over the course of 2021 so far, Fox News reported.

A total of 214 U.S. children 17 years old or younger have died of COVID-19 in 2021. Underage COVID-19 deaths make up 0-0.27% of all COVID-19 deaths among states reporting, including seven states that reported zero deaths among children, according to the CDC and American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). This despite increased cases among children between August and September.

Comparatively, the Chicago Police Department told FOX 32 Chicago earlier this week that 261 children have been shot in the city so far in 2021 — 41 of whom have died.

Restricting the comparison to the state of Illinois, more children have been fatally shot in Chicago alone than have died of COVID-19 in the entire state.

The Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed to Fox News that 25 people under the age of 18 have died of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, or six in every 100,000 people under 18 in Illinois. The CDC has recorded 18 total COVID-19 deaths in Illinois in 2021, as Outkick first reported.
