GILROY — A police shooting occurred early Wednesday in the city’s downtown area, according to authorities.

Gilroy police confirmed the shooting occurred near Fourth and Eigleberry streets, but did not release any additional details Wednesday morning other than to advise people to avoid the area and that there would be no access to the post office at the intersection because of the ensuing investigation.

But emergency dispatch recordings archived online indicate there was a fire-paramedic call at 2:43 a.m. to the building that houses the post office.

The dispatch communication specifically mentions that emergency personnel were called to respond to a shooting victim in front of the post office, and that the injured person had suffered a head wound.

The recordings also indicate that a helicopter was summoned to transport the injured person to the hospital.
